Spring Shrouds
The Spring Shrouds responded to a commission from comedian Mark Thomas, to create temporary space from advertising in Manchester, on a busy rush hour morning.
This collaboration between artists and anti-consumerism campaigners saw a small army of volunteers create and install a handmade canvas 'shroud' for every street based advert shell in the city.
In all we produced 100 ad shell shrouds, each carrying the image of a tree and the legend 'trees breathe - adverts suck'.
A few precious moments of peace and beauty were snatched, in place of the incessant chatter of advertising. Space was liberated and the brief vision of streets lined with trees, rather than metal hoardings, was glimpsed.

Close XTiny Travelling Treasury
A mysterious set of instructions, dispensed by a lucky Chinese cat, awakens the participants' urge to navigate through the city streets, make discoveries, collect treasures and contribute the gathered fortunes to the museum.
The Tiny Traveling Treasury is a unique interactive object developed for Urbis in Manchester. The piece, over eight feet tall and handmade from 100% recycled materials, was specially commissioned for the 2007 'Play' exhibition.
During its residency at Urbis, the Treasury grew and responded as people added to it, creating a living document of the city. It quickly became the most popular exhibit in the show, used by 1000's of intrigued visitors.
The Treasury is a good example of taking an initial brief to make a print based exhibition guide and working with the client, turn it into something much grander and expressive (without using up all that paper!).

Scouse Soul Stew
Scouse Soul Stew is an arts and health project taking place in various neighbourhoods in Liverpool over 2009. The project aims to examine the ingredients of life in Liverpool that are important to the community, that enrich lives and nourish souls.
The project has been commissioned by Liverpool Primary Care Trust and is being led by UHC in partnership with culturepool and Metal. Ultimately the engagement analyses relationships between healthcare providers and the community, look at artist's approaches to communication and facilitation and create new work building on some of UHC's existing tools.
Events have taken place at various venues in with food and discussion. Each discussion was accompanied by an illustrator, who documented the discussions live. The outcomes of the discussions have been summarised in a huge illustrated map and recipe booklet, Including pictures of some of the 16 banners produced during the project that depict the chosen 'ingredients for a healthy community' chosen by local people.
The project concluded in October with several public weaving workshops, where the community's banners were woven into one huge cloth wall hanging. The piece will be on display in the Lifebank Centre over Christmas.
